De Gea’s rise to stardom

28-year-old shot-stopper David De Gea made the move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The Rojiblancos youth product initially struggled to settle, though, with many having questioned whether or not De Gea would be capable of fulfilling his unquestionable potential under the bright lights of one of world football’s biggest clubs.

However, the years since have seen the Madrid native do just that, and more.

De Gea has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest goalkeepers on the planet, whilst cementing his status as Manchester United’s most important player.
De Gea’s struggles

But, with United having, particularly over recent years, largely failed to capitalize on their shot-stopper’s brilliance in terms of securing any form of meaningful silverware, De Gea has inevitably been linked with a possible departure from Old Trafford.

And the alarming dip in form suffered by the former Atletico man over the final months of last season has since only seen the speculation surrounding his future move up a notch, with French giants PSG long-touted as a potential destination.

De Gea to pen new deal?

As such, with just 12 months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, suggestions had begun to mount that United could be forced into parting ways with De Gea this summer, to ensure that they managed to secure some form of return for the Spaniard.

Such claims, however, have since been definitively shut down.

On the back of reports last month that contract negotiations between the parties were firmly back on track, the Telegraph followed up yesterday by confirming that the 28-year-old is on the verge of penning a new 6-year deal, which is set to make him the best-paid goalkeeper on the planet.

And subsequent updates in the English media this afternoon suggest that De Gea’s commitment to the United cause will not end with pledging his future to the club.

A further report from the Telegraph has revealed that the Spanish international is also eyeing the Red Devils’ captaincy.

De Gea is keen to take on more of a leader’s role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad, amid the Manchester giants’ push to reestablish themselves amongst the elite of English football:
