Rafa Benitez Responds to Controversial Equaliser in Newcastle's Disappointing Draw Against Wolves
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has said he was not happy with referee Graham Scott following Newcastles 1-1 draw with Wolves in the Premier League on Monday night.
The referee allowed a late equaliser to stand despite Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka appearing to be fouled before the ball was bundled into the net by Willy Boly in the 95th minute, earning Wolves a dramatic point.
Isaac Hayden had given Newcastle the lead after an hour, and the visitors looked like they would be taking three points back to Tyneside before Bolys controversial late goal earned Wolves a point.
Speaking to Sky Sports as quoted by BBC Sport, Benitez said: "These kind of balls you can do a little bit better, punch the ball. That’s it.
"It was not very clear watching the replay. It is something we have to defend better. We know it is England and people will come to the keeper.
"I was not happy with some decisions from the referee, but overall he was fine.
"We had to be strong enough defending the cross."
Regarding the performance of club-record signing Miguel Almiron, on his debut, Benitez stated: "We needed some fresh legs. He could make the runs. Overall, I think he did well."
Despite having victory snatched from their grasp in agonising fashion, Newcastle can take a number of positives from the game. One of those was the man-of-the-match performance by 21-year-old midfielder Sean Longstaff, who was thoroughly impressive in the middle of the park.
Newcastle will be hoping to return to winning ways in their next fixture, which sees them host Huddersfield in the Premier League on Saturday 23 February.
